If you say you have it set to 1000px why can't you just change the 1000px to 100% or is the px embedded into the settings...?

Which is what we ended up doing a year ago. The only problems is that changing the main table width does not alter all the pieces of the fixed width design into the correct proportions.

It works well enough that this is what we've been doing ever since I asked the question over a year ago.
